Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana is a very prestigious scholarship given to students to portray their talents and aptitude in the areas of basic science, engineering and medicine. This is a nationwide fellowship funded by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. This fellowship was started in the year 1999 and is granted to the students upto pre-Ph.D level.

Apart from the funds provided by DST, the program is administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. The KVPY qualified students are given direct admission into two top science research institutes in India that is The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and All India Institute of Scientific Education and Research (IISER)

The application process for the fellowship program generally begins in the month of July and ends by August. The aptitude test is generally conducted in the month of November. The result of the Aptitude exam is generally declared in the month of December. There are three categories in which the aptitude exam will be conducted. They are as follows:

· Stream SA- Class 11 students: Students enrolled in class 11 in science stream and willing to join undergraduate program in basic science that is B.Sc/B.S/B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc/M.S.

· Stream SX- Class 12 students: Students enrolled in class 12 in science stream and willing to join undergraduate program in basic science that is B.Sc/B.S/B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc/M.S.

· Stream SB-Students enrolled in First Year B.Sc/B.S/B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S in basic sciences.

This fellowship program is only for the students of India. PIO and OCI students are not eligible for this fellowship. Students willing to pursue distance education through this fellowship should not apply. The fellowship is renewed every year according to the academic performance of the students and the students must have scored 60% in addition to participation and satisfactory performance in the summer camp in the first year and summer project every year.

Exam Pattern: The Aptitude Test will be administered in both the offline paper mode as well as the online computer based mode. Students of the SA Stream will have to attempt a total of 80 questions in the aptitude test while students of the SB/SX Stream will have to attempt a total of 120 questions. There is no syllabus prescribed as such for the written exam and the questions are mostly aimed to assess the understanding and analytical ability of students rather than their factual knowledge. Students should, however, have a grasp on all the topics of the Class 10/12/First Year Syllabus of B.Sc. /B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S. as applicable. The aptitude test is conducted in both online mode in some states and offline mode in some states.

Result: Generally, the exam conducting authority publishes the results of the Aptitude Test within a month after its completion. Candidates who are shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the aptitude test will be called for an interview round. The final results will be declared after the successful completion of both the stages of selection.
